Maia Makhateli is born in Tbilisi Georgia, she  began her training  at the Choreographic instite of Vakhtang CHabukiani under tutorship of Svetlana Mtvarelishvili,  Larisa Chkikvishvili and both her parents Nikoloz Makhateli and Marina Loladze. Maia's both parents were former principal dancers in Tbilisi Georgia, also her grand father was a famous fold dancer who  invented the elements of folk dance, her grandmother was an opera singer and her brother was a principal dancer with the Royal Ballet. 

  In 2002 Maia and her parents moved to United States and she continued her training in Colorado with German Zamuel and Valentina Mukhanova.

 Maia was participating in many competitions in that time  and she got an offer to join Colorado Ballet (Director Martin Freedman) Maia was the youngest member of the comapny.   After dancing so many leading roles Maia got Promoted to principal dancer after her debut as princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty. 

   In 2005 Maia joined Birmingham Royal Ballet (director David Bintley) as a solist she danced there one season.  

  In 2006 she was invited to Join the Dutch National Ballet(director Ted Brandsen) 

  Maia appears as a guest artist with different companies: Portland Oregon Ballet, Kazan State ballet theater, Kremlin State ballet theater, California Ballet, Georgia State ballet. Maia also travels around the world and participates in international ballet festivals and Galas, in Tokyo, Taipei, Kazan, Moscow, Qatar, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Brusseles Paris etc. 

  Maia has worked with many great and famous choreographers. Christopher Wheeldon, Hans Van Manen, Rudi Van Dantzig, Aleksei Ratmansky, Yuri Grigorovich, Natalia Makarova, Benjamin Millepied, David Dawson, John Neumeier and many others. 

   In 2011 Maia recieved the Nina Ananiashvili and Gilbert Albert Awared. Which was established by Georgian prima ballerina Nina Ananiashvili and swiss Jeweler Gilber Albert star award.  

  In 2014 Maia was nominated as one of the outstanding dancers in the Netherlands by Critics Choice for her performance in Aleksei Ratmansky's Firebird and Balanchine's Tchaikovsky Pas de deux.
