First soloist Maia Makhateli has the difficult task of not one, but two completely different roles to dance, that of white swan Odette (a princess enchanted by von Rothbart) and black swan Odile (the daughter of Von Rothbart). For one role should they be gentle, modest and delicate, the other vitriolic and passionate. Maia let this contrast look perfect; almost as if they are two dancers.
Admiringly I'm looking at the dynamics Maia brings in the roles of the white and black swan, comes one of the most-discussed moments: the 32 fouettes those people, according to the flyer, breathless behold and count. I'm so breathless that I watch the first six or seven've missed before I think of to count (and the second time this happened again), because what is insane and pretty mean!
